During festivities held in honor of Bacchus, the Bacchantes, who were the god's priestesses, indulged in unrestrained love-play and in orgiastic rites. They sang, danced, shouted, and ran about wildly and disheveled, crowned with ivy, holding the thyrsus, a staff with a pine cone or a bunch of vine or ivy leaves with grapes or berries.
